Alla Prima Painting

KCIL 308 - 3 Credit Hours

A topical course that allows the program to repsond to students' interest in a particular area, or other expressed need, or capacity to offer a particular topic.

 

An advanced painting course that emphasizes the Alla Prima method of paint application as it applies to Illustration and illustrative concepts. 

 

Students will be able to complete professional-quality illustrations within a scheduled time frame using a precise step-by-step method of direct painting. The class will emphasize the use of color and light as a means of creating expressive illustrative concepts and compositions. The development of the relationship between value and color temperature will be explored, stressing color harmony with variety and the modeling of light and shadow on objects using appropriate tonal value, color relationships and paint handling. Further emphasis will be placed on the study of historical and contemporary artists in both the Fine Arts and field of Illustration, highlighting the multitude of approaches taken in the development of narrative concept and cultural relevance.

Project 1

Illustrator: Steve Adams

Create an illustrative portrait that expresses some kind of emotion or personality of the sitter. Take into account the use of appropriate lighting, color palette and pose to present a complete visual representation of your subject.

Illustrator: Forest Miller

Illustrate a phobia.

Project 3

-(4") sponge brush or paint brush - for priming and/or staining

-spray fixative (matte finish)

-illustration board (Cresent Cold Press #1 3x)

-Rtistix board

-masonite, particleboard, Ampersand hardboard

-canvas board

-palette paper (12"x16" or larger) or mixing surface
